CHM Peer Tutor Position Description                  2022-2023

The Center for Learning is hiring peer tutors for the 2022-23 academic year. A CHM Peer Tutor will host a welcoming, inclusive study space called a “Study Table” (in person or via Zoom) and assist students individually and in small groups who drop in to ask questions, do homework, and study for exams for general chemistry and survey of chemistry courses (120x and 131x series). The tutor will work 4-8 hours per week during each quarter (specific times depending on tutor availability and program needs).

A CHM Study Tables Peer Tutor must have completed the following courses:
  • CHM 1211, 1212 and 1213
  • CHM 1330 or 3371-3373
  • CHM 1360 or BIO 2101 (or be taking CHM 4361 in fall 2022)
In addition, the tutor must be able to communicate effectively and have a CHM faculty recommendation affirming a strong grasp of related academic subject matter.

Peer Tutors must exhibit:
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong grasp of general chemistry content (Bs or above in CHM/BIO courses outlined above)
  • A commitment to equity and inclusion
  • The ability to recommend academic tools and strategies to their peers
  • In addition, a Peer Tutor must hold and maintain an overall GPA of 3.2 or higher and must be in good standing with the university.

Compensation:
  • Hourly pay rate is $17.48 per hour
  • Tutors are paid for assigned tutoring hours and training sessions they attend

Job Responsibilities
  1. Host study tables sessions and promote a welcoming, inclusive learning environment
  2. Engage student questions by helping students assess what they already know about class content and what they still need to learn
  3. Model and teach learning strategies for course content
  4. Use class resources and tutor knowledge to help student fill gaps in understanding
  5. Refer students to faculty members when their questions are beyond the scope of the tutor
  6. Participate in ongoing training and supervision meetings
  7. Be responsible for other related tasks, as assigned
  8. Be able to tutor during fall, winter, and spring quarter of 2022-23 academic year
