Office of Safety & Security Mission
Education – the business of a University – can only take place in an environment in which each individual feels safe and secure. The Office of Safety and Security seeks to provide a safe working, learning, and living environment for the SPU community and to protect University assents through crime prevention and safety practices.

About the Office of Safety & Security
The Office of Safety and Security (OSS) is a campus security organization which operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The office employs full-time staff as dispatchers and security officers. Student employees are employed to provide additional support as dispatchers, parking enforcement, and patrol officers. OSS is the first response on campus to all emergencies including providing immediate first aid, investigating criminal incidents, responding to fire alarms, and disaster assistance.

About the Position
The basic patrol officer (BPO) provides general service, safety escorts, information and assistance to faculty, staff, students, and visitors on campus. The BPO enforces parking on campus, as well as assists officers with campus patrols and maintaining the security of residence halls, apartments, and campus buildings. The BPO also assists security officers with emergencies and special events as needed. The security department will provide a uniform that is required to be worn. Physical demands include moderate physical activity that includes prolonged standing and/or walking, handling moderate weight objects and/or using or carrying equipment. Flexibility is important as shifts may vary. Most shifts consist of 1) weekends, 8am to 4:30pm or 4:00pm to 10:00pm; 2) weekdays from 4pm to 10pm; 3) weekdays from 8am to 11:30am or 1pm to 4pm. Employment is available for all three academic quarters as well as breaks and summer.

Qualifications
  • Able to gather pertinent information quickly and accurately, with the ability to communicate this information professionally and precisely to the proper recipient.
  • Ability to be accurate and courteous in communication with other employees and other agencies.
  • Ability to read and understand correspondence, memorandum, and directions.
  • Act in a decisive manner, using good judgment.
  • Assess problems and situations, in order to anticipate needs and evaluate alternatives.
  • Must be consistent in dealing with people, have personal integrity, sensitive to others; personal problems without direct involvement, and able to exclude personal biases from work performance.
  • Ability to produce high quality, accurate work. Able to detect and correct errors and able to perform tasks simultaneously if need.
  • Ability to work independently and properly handle confidential information.
  • Must have a clean driving and criminal record.
  • Must be able to work nights, weekends, holidays, and over academic breaks.

Training
  • All persons hired as student dispatchers are placed in a ten to twelve week initial training phase that includes work on all shifts.
  • Training and regular shifts will be assigned in 4 to 8 hour blocks. Shift schedules are assigned per seniority totaling 15 to 20 hours a week during the academic year.
  • During this training, the employee will be given the information, skills and hands-on experience necessary to successfully meet job expectations.
  • Basic Patrol Officers can work up to 40 hours a week when classes are not in session.
