Weekend Overnight Shelter Staff -- State and Federal Work Study

POSITION SUMMARY:
 
Responsibilities: ROOTS Young Adult Shelter in the U-District is seeking candidates for the position of Weekend Overnight Shelter Staff. Weekend Overnight Shelter Staff help ensure the smooth functioning of our overnight program by training and supporting overnight volunteers, as well as assisting with conflict de-escalation and general overnight and morning shelter operations. This position works weekly Friday, Saturday, or Sunday overnight shifts in our shelter from 8:00pm-8:30am (Saturday morning shifts will go until 9:30am).
 
Accountability: The Weekend Overnight Shelter Staff reports directly to the Program Supervisor, who will conduct regular 1:1 supervision meetings.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supervise shelter guest activities and enforce program guidelines, provide supplies and resources as needed, interact and build positive relationships with guests staying in the shelter. ƒ
  • Be familiar with shelter policies and practices and written records required by ROOTS and its contracting partners. ƒ
  • Communicate with other shelters and service providers in the regional area to coordinate care for shelter guests and make referrals to other services or shelters. ƒ
  • Must remain awake during entire shift. ƒ
  • Maintain safety and security by monitoring all general access areas, responding to escalations, and enforcing program rules and policies. ƒ
  • Conduct walks around shelter to check on each guest in conjunction with the other GSS on duty and the Program Supervisor. ƒ
  • Intervene in crises, respond to emergencies, and initiate action as required, including contact with emergency response systems and ROOTS management in coordination with the Program Supervisor on shift. ƒ
  • Serve as floor staff during the hours of shelter operations and complete morning tasks to ensure all guests are awake and exit shelter on time and that shelter is prepared for the coming evening. ƒ
  • Train and mentor new Overnight Volunteers, in conjunction with the Volunteer Supervisor team and Program Supervisors. ƒ
  • Post menus and/or prepare food for meals in collaboration with kitchen meal teams and Volunteer Supervisor. ƒ
  • Manage donations for hygiene and other shelter supplies items in coordination with other team members and at the direction of the Program Supervisor and Director of Programming.
  • Participate in staff meetings and trainings. ƒ
  • Other duties as assigned.
 
REQUIREMENTS
  • The chosen candidate will attend The Ropes training, Anti-Oppression 101, Conflict Response, and ROOTS' Volunteer Orientation

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Commitment to undoing racism and oppression in all its forms. ƒ
  • Experience serving vulnerable populations in a service setting, working specifically with youth and young adults preferred. ƒ
  • Lived experience will be considered along with other qualifications. ƒ
  • Demonstrate ability to work effectively in a volunteer-driven, harm reduction oriented, service organization. ƒ
  • Highly developed communication skills: ability to communicate the written and spoken word clearly and effectively; ability to communicate to a wide variety of people with ease. ƒ
  • Good interpersonal skills. ƒ
  • Solid understanding of issues related to poverty, oppression, and homelessness
 
This is a part-time hourly position scheduled for a minimum one or two 12 hour shelter shifts per week. Shifts will likely be scheduled for Friday, Saturday, or Sunday nights. Work-Study compensation available for eligible candidates. Compensation is $15/hour.
