Office of Safety & Security Mission
Education – the business of a University – can only take place in an environment in which each individual feels safe and secure. The Office of Safety and Security seeks to provide a safe working, learning, and living environment for the SPU community and to protect University assents through crime prevention and safety practices.

About the Office of Safety & Security
The Office of Safety and Security (OSS) is a campus security organization which operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The office employs full-time staff as dispatchers and security officers. Student employees are employed to provide additional support as dispatchers, parking enforcement and patrol officers. OSS is the first response on campus to all emergencies including providing immediate first aid, investigating criminal incidents, responding to fire alarms, and disaster assistance.

About the position:
The position of student Parking Enforcement Officer (PEO plays a vital role in the implementation of the University's parking and transportation program by enforcing the University's parking rules and regulations. Enforcement activities include, but are not limited to, assurance of adherence to all University and city parking rules, policies, and regulations, monitoring and maintaining surveillance, and other enforcement technologies. PEOs issue citations using hand-held terminal and portable printer are responsible for the safeguarding and proper use of the handheld device/enforcement equipment. They are required to be knowledgeable of all campus parking lots, buildings, and assist visitors with directions and information. The PEO must identify and report hazardous parking or traffic conditions observed on university property. They may be called upon to assist other members of the security department in the office or in the field. PEOs may also be tasked with providing office support for projects and respond to walk-in customer requests for services. PEOs will utilize multi-frequency radios to communicate with dispatchers and other officers. This position includes additional duties as assigned. It is also considered Essential and PEOs are required to report to campus and remain during inclement weather and other emergency situations as defined by department policy.

Qualifications
  • Able to gather pertinent information quickly and accurately, with the ability to communicate this information professionally and precisely to the proper recipient.
  • Ability to be accurate and courteous in communication with other employees and other agencies.
  • Ability to read and understand correspondence, memorandum, and directions.
  • Act in a decisive manner, using good judgment.
  • Assess problems and situations, in order to anticipate needs and evaluate alternatives.
  • Must be consistent in dealing with people, have personal integrity, sensitive to others; personal problems without direct involvement, and able to exclude personal biases from work performance.
  • Ability to produce high quality, accurate work. Able to detect and correct errors and able to perform tasks simultaneously if need.
  • Ability to work independently and properly handle confidential information.
  • Must have a clean driving and criminal record.
  • Occasional evening, holiday, weekend hours may be required for special events
  • Additional hours may be available during academic breaks.

Training
  • All persons hired as student parking enforcement officers are placed in a 1-2 week initial training phase.
  • Training and regular shifts will be assigned in 2 to 4 hour blocks Monday through Friday between 8am and 5pm.
  • Shift schedules are assigned per seniority totaling 6 to 20 hours a week during the academic year and based quarterly on availability between academic courses.
  • During this training, the employee will be given the information, skills and hands-on experience necessary to successfully meet job expectations.
