Responsibilities

The SPU Library provides resources, assistance, technology tools, and space for students to discover, create, and share. Library Assistants support many core services at the Seattle Pacific University Library including circulation and technology. 
As a Library Assistant you will provide frontline assistance to library patrons, including providing excellent customer service at the desk and throughout the library. You will direct patrons to the proper location of library resources, respond to patron inquires in-person or over the phone, assist students and library patrons with various technology tools in addition to supporting library technology hardware and software. 
You will assist patrons using the online catalog and databases, searching for and retrieving reserve items and locating physical resources in the stacks; check items in and out, collect fines, process electronic payments; shelve books and periodicals, retrieve items for Summit borrowing; assist with inventory and shelf maintenance projects; or other tasks as assigned.
You will provide on-the-spot answers to educational technology uses, consult on the effective use of software and technology tools within an academic project, and provide hardware and software support. Assistants will provide in-depth support of MFP use, wireless printing installation, and wireless internet connectivity. Assistants support the SPU Library's role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) literacy which includes: 1. Supporting patrons by reflecting on their ICT needs; 2. Helping patrons adopt, adapt, and use digital devices, applications, and services effectively; and 3. Helping patrons navigate the ethical use of ICT.


Required Attributes

A desire to help people; exceptional customer service experience; strong work ethic (e.g., punctual and trustworthy); ability and desire to learn Windows and Mac based operating systems; desire to learn and teach students the effective use of software applications; desire to learn and teach students the effective use of various technology tools; interest in emerging technology. Familiarity with the Library of Congress catalog numbering. Must have great attention to detail and excellent interpersonal and communication skills.


Preferred Attributes

Library experience helpful, but not required. An ability to quickly change focus, work under pressure, and multitask; background in technology support, and an intermediate/advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Windows and Mac), latest versions of Windows and Apple OS X, Apple iOS devices, and an intermediate knowledge of video technology, including YouTube, iMovie, video cameras, digital file conversion, and more. Flexible schedule to accommodate evenings and weekends (refer to the SPU Library's hours).

Length of Employment

Library Assistants are hired for a specific academic year. Employment is not guaranteed beyond the academic year the employee was hired.


Compensation

Compensation is based on years of service. Assistants start at minimum wage (based on the City of Seattle and/or State of Washington) and may receive an increase every academic year.
